New York Assemblyman Zohran mamdaniwho is on track to win the Democratic Party’s nomination in the New York City mayoral race, on Wednesday reacted to Donald Trump calling him a “100% Communist Lunatic” following his surprise success, warning the president that he is prepared to challenge the more cruel elements of his agenda.

In an interview with ABC News’ Rachel ScottMamdani conceded that he will likely be a frequent target of the president going forward, while urging Trump to look up his platform.
“You know, this is not the first time that President Trump is going to comment on myself, and I encourage him — just like I encourage every New Yorker — to learn about my actual policies to make the city affordable,” Mamdani said.

Mamdani added that Trump has so far failed to fulfill his campaign promise of lowering prices, noting that this could be an issue “that I would be willing to work with him.”

Mamdani made affordability a central focus of his grassroots campaign, offering proposals to address the high cost of living in the city, including one to create a chain of city-owned grocery stores.

Meanwhile, the democratic socialist clarified he is prepared to clash with Trump over his mass deportation policies, among other things.

“If he continues to focus on persecuting political enemies and on trying to detain and disappear New Yorkers, be it on the basis of their documentation or their sexual orientation or their politics, that is someone that I will fight time and again,” Mamdani told ABC.

In a post on his Truth Social platform hours after Mamdani declared victory, Trump said Democrats “have crossed the line” with their selection.

“Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor. We’ve had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous,” Trump wrote. “He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart.”
Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), who was considered the front-runner in the primary, conceded the race after it became clear Mamdani had secured a big enough lead. Cuomo has yet to rule out a third-party run in November’s general election.
