The National Council for Energy Policy (CNPE) is expected to approve on Wednesday the increase in the mix of ethanol in gasoline to 30%. Currently, this percentage is 27.5%.
The 2nd Extraordinary Meeting of CNPE will also be attended by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Besides him, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, will be present.
Chaired by Silveira, the Council serves as a presidency advisory body in the formulation of policies on the energy sector. Representatives of the federal government, civil society and educational institutions are part of the collegiate.
Tests conducted by the Mauá Institute of Technology (IMT) released in March, according to the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), proved the technical viability of the new fuel.
The estimate is a reduction of up to R $ 0.13 per liter of gasoline, an impact that will also contribute to the control of inflation, according to Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira.
The transition from the 27.5% to 30% mixture should prevent the importation of 760 million liters of gasoline per year, according to the government. This will represent an increase of 1.5 billion liters in demand for ethanol and an estimated investment of R $ 9 billion in the sector.

The legislation allows to expand the limit of ethanol in gasoline to up to 35%, provided that the technical viability is proven. IMT tests were accompanied by automotive entities such as Anfavea, Sindipeças, Abraciclo and Abeifa.
