United States President Donald Trump evaluates in the second half the name he intends to indicate to chair the Federal Reserve (Fed), even with the current term of Jerome Powell valid until May 2026. The information is from the newspaper Wall Street Journal.
The measure, considered atypical, is seen as an attempt to undermine Powell’s authority and influence monetary policy decisions before the official command exchange.
According to sources heard by Wall Street JournalTrump has been frustrating with the slow pace of interest cuts and may announce his nominee as early as September and October – or even earlier, during the US summer.
Among the names listed are Kevin Warsh, former Fed director, Kevin Hassett of the National Economic Council, and the current Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. They also appear on the list David Malpass, former president of the World Bank, and the current director of the Fed Christopher Waller.
An early nomination would give to the informal successor – nicknamed behind the scenes of “shadow president” – margin to shape market expectations before officially assuming the post.
Trump made it clear, during a news conference at NATO, who intends to name someone more aligned with his view of expansionary monetary policy: “He [Powell] It comes out, fortunately, because I think it’s terrible, ”he said.
