Automaker responded federal agency on infractions of their autonomous cars, but asked the information not to become public
THE Tesla barely launched his robotaxi service and he already is undergoing an investigation.
The National Administration of United States Highway Traffic (NHTSA) requested information from the automaker about infractions, and Tesla asked the agency to keep its answers confidential, according to the ELECREK.
Tesla’s robotax had already generated worries after being caught making serious errors on the first day of operation.
Tesla had to clarify questions
- Prior to launch, NHTSA had sent Tesla an extensive questionnaire about using the Supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) system in Robotaxi-a technology that is still under investigation for involvement in serious accidents.
- The automaker answered, but requested total confidentiality about the information.
- Tesla historically avoids disclosing public data on its autopilot and FSD, even opposing the release of accident data, claiming that this would cause “financial losses”.

Videos that circulated after the launch showed Robotaxi failures, including vehicles driving in the opposite direction and dropping passengers at intersections, which caught the attention of NHTSA. The agency has confirmed to be aware of the incidents and that it will collect information directly with Tesla.
Another critical point involves the level of robotaxis automation.
Witnesses report that during the operation, a Tesla employee remained his finger pressed on a reprogrammed button as a safety switch, which would indicate that the system does not meet autonomous level 4 requirements required for commercial texts in Texas.
NHTSA investigation into Tesla’s FSD system is still open, and the agency reinforces that manufacturers should ensure compliance with security standards, without prior approval by the entity. Depending on the information obtained, new measures may be taken.
