The Senate should vote, on Wednesday, the bill that increases by 18 the number of federal deputies, bringing the total from 513 to 531. The president of the House, David Alcolumbre (Union-AP), said that parliamentarians will analyze the text already approved by the House, which could have an annual impact of $ 64.6 million, which would be resolved with the remediation of funds already foreseen in the budget.
Unanimously, the Federal Supreme Court (STF) understood, last year, that a Review of the distribution of parliamentarians by stateaccording to a population increase demonstrated in the 2022 demographic census.
If the number of 513 deputies were maintained, with a reorganization of chairs, states such as Paraíba, the state of the mayor, Hugo Motta, could lose space.
The proposal on the agenda, authored by Deputy Dani Cunha (União-RJ), determines that no state may suffer loss of chairs.
– Expense assessment has already been made. It will not result in increased expenses. The House did a study of it. The most correct is to expand in several states. I will talk to senators to enforce the increase already for the next elections, ”said Alcolumbre about the text.
The House is proportionally composed by the representatives of each state and the Federal District. Each federation unit has at least eight and at most 70 deputies, depending on its population. However, some states complain that the number has not been updated according to recent variations in the number of inhabitants.

The report by Deputy Damião Feliciano (Union-PB) points out that the increase in parliamentarians will cost R $ 64.6 million to the public coffers. The opinion also points out that, according to government calculations, the 2027 budget of the House will already have a sufficient readjustment to cover the additional expense.
According to the proposal approved in the House, eight states would benefit from more chairs, as they expanded the populations: Santa Catarina, Pará, Amazonas, Ceará, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso and Rio Grande do Norte. Another seven benches, which would lose chairs if the change were made by maintaining the current number of vacancies, would continue to intact chairs. They are: Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Piauí, Paraíba, Bahia, Pernambuco and Alagoas.
The calculation is done as follows: the total number of the Brazilian population (203.080.756 million), divided by the new number of chairs of the House (531). The result is equivalent to how many people each chair represents (382,449,000). Then the population of each state was divided by the amount of people representing a chair (Pop. State/382,449,000).
