Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – The University of Pittsburgh has announced the dismissal of athletic director Heather Lyke, citing a need for a “new vision and a new leader” to guide the department in the evolving landscape of college athletics.

Lyke, who joined Pitt in 2017, oversaw significant achievements during her tenure. The football team won the ACC championship in 2021, the women’s volleyball team reached three consecutive Final Fours, and the men’s soccer program advanced to the College Cup twice in the past four seasons.
However, differences in vision between Lyke and Chancellor Joan Gabel, who was formally inaugurated in April, contributed to her dismissal. Sources indicate that the two disagreed on various issues, including name, image, and likeness (NIL) policies.
Executive associate athletic director Jennifer Tuscano will serve as interim athletic director until a permanent replacement is hired.
Lyke’s departure comes at a time when she was actively seeking other athletic director positions, including at Northwestern and Ohio State. While she and the university were discussing a contract extension, they were unable to reach an agreement.
