On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina lovers will have to drive to west Michigan to find a location.
The Tex-Mex chain’s last location in southeast Michigan, its Allen Park restauranthas permanently closed. A bankruptcy filing in March had said three locations remained open in the state, now only two are open.
The restaurants that remain open both are in the Grand Rapids area, in Grandville and in Woodland Mall in Kentwood.

Where did On the Border close in Michigan?
The On the Border restaurant in Allen Park, Michigan, is permanently closed, according to a Google search and Facebook. The chain’s website displays a “page not found,” message for the location’s profile.
What is On the Border?
On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina is a Tex-Mex style restaurant chain founded in 1982, the chain’s website says.
Only 12 years after the opening of the restaurant, Brinker International acquired the company and opened the first franchised location. By 2001, more than 100 restaurants were open across the U.S. and in 2007, the restaurant went international, opening locations in South Korea.
In 2010 the company, as well as 160 restaurants, was sold to Golden Gate Capital, which then turned around to sell it to Argonne Capital Group in 2014, court records say.
The company website shows locations in California, Nevada, Illinois, Indiana, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Colorado, South Dakota, Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut.
Why are locations closing?
On the Border has closed over 70 locations since the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2025.
A group of 40 restaurants closed in February 2025 included four Michigan locations: Auburn Hills, Holland, Novi and Westland.
