Construtora Mendes Júnior’s request to reopen the discussion of the largest request for compensation for the country’s history, R $ 1.7 trillion (in 2010 values), was denied by the Federal Regional Court of the 5th Region (TRF5) last Wednesday, 18.
The construction company alleges alleged financial loss in the construction of the Itaparica Hydroelectric Power Plant (today called Luiz Gonzaga), in Pernambuco, in the 1980s. The company would have taken loans to finance the works of Itaparica. The contractor was hired in 1981 and completed the construction in 1986.
The federal judges of the 1st Section of the TRF5 dismissed the termination action filed by Mendes Júnior and accepted the arguments of the Attorney General of the Union (AGU) and the São Francisco Valley Hydro Company (Chesf). With this, a judgment was confirmed in 2010, contrary to the collection action.

At the time, the required figure represented almost half of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and would be sufficient to build “51 hydroelectric plants much larger than Itaparica or at least 10 Itaipu hydroelectric plants”, as stated in the judgment.
The report tried to contact the construction company until the publication of this text, but to no avail. The space is open for manifestation.
