Kim Jong-un’s regime is inaugurating a new luxury resort in a North Korea coastal zone, an announcement that has aroused global curiosity, as the country is one of the most prisoners in the world.
According to the communist dictatorship, the new attraction aims to debut a new era of the “tourism industry” in the country. However, there are still no details if the Kim regime intends to receive foreign visitors.
According to information released in the North Korean state media, the Won-Kalma Coastal Tourist Zone is capable of receiving up to 20,000 people in hotels and other accommodations built on site. The resort also has a leisure area, such as pool, fields for sports and other recreational activities, and restaurants and coffee shops.
Quoted by the news agency Kcnadictator Kim said after participating in the resort opening ceremony that his construction was considered “one of the biggest hits of the year” and a “proud first step” to develop tourism in North Korea.
State media reported that the first calls will be dedicated to North Korean tourists and there is no indication, for now, of an expansion to receive a foreign audience.
Possibly, if there is a future opening, Russia and its allies will be the first authorized to make the trip. Countries have expanded cooperation since last year, especially in relation to the invasion in Ukraine, where North Korean soldiers began to act alongside the Russians.
Russian authorities reported on Thursday that tourists from their country can start visiting the tourist complex next month. According to the Russian agency Tass, citizens of the Primorsky region, Russia, who borders North Korea, will arrive at the resort from July 7.
According to Associated Press (AP)Observers say the resort probably required a major investment in North Korea’s limited budget, another reason that signals a possible opening to accept foreign tourists.
KCNA also reported that the Kim regime should soon announce new plans to build major tourist attractions in other parts of the country. Since 2020, with the beginning of the pandemic, the country has closed even more restricting the entry of all foreigners, as it has not been fully revoked so far.
