(Bloomberg)-A bomb man, a member of the Islamic State extremist group, exploded within a church in Damascus, a deadly attack that aggravates the sectarian problems of the Syriawhile the country devastated by war struggles to contain violence after the deposition of President Bashar al-Assad in December.

Thirteen civilians were killed and 53 were injured in the attack that targeted the Mar Church Elias, in the Dweila district, in the Syrian capital, the Ministry of Health told state news agency Sana.

Using an explosive vest, the perpetrator opened fire before detonating himself, according to the Interior Ministry, which confirmed his affiliation with IS.

Church photos and videos show destroyed benches, covered with rubble and bloodstains on the floor.

President Ahmed al-Sharaa, whose Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham group led an Islamic uprising against Assad, has tried to prevent violence that broke out in Syria a few months after the fall of his predecessor. He has sought to grasp all weapons and dissolve the armed factions in the country.
