Amazon elects Brazil as the country where it will invest the most in expansion

The engines are in full swing on Amazon Brazil (AMZO34). Not for no reason: the region has become the focus of investments in the global operation. This year, it has already had an exchange of the main leadership position, inaugurated its largest distribution center in Latin America and is increasing investments.

“I am assuming in the year when Amazon globally made the decision that Brazil would be the country in which it is most investing for expansion in the world,” said Amazon Brazil President Juliana Sztrajtman. “We believe it is the country that can most bring new customers to Amazon globally.”

Although it does not share the projection, Sztrajtman says the company has contributed $ 8 billion in the country in the last two years. It is a significant portion of the $ 33 billion invested since it started its operation here in 2011. “The decision this year was to invest even more,” he said.

The executive took over the main chair of the online retail giant in January this year, after the departure of Daniel Mazini, in charge of the company since 2021. Before arriving at the post of president, Sztrajtman was the Retail Director of Amazon Brazil, and has been following a heated competition in the sector.

Amazon and Free Market (MELI34) have disputed prices and delivery speed in the nailwhile the National Magalu tries to hold the pace of the two foreign giants and the arrival of Asian players.

She states that she has taken on a mandate of “expanding considerably” the offer of 150 million products available on the retailer’s website today, and further accelerates the deadline for delivery of online purchases. These goals go through the increase in the company’s capacity in Brazil, with new distribution centers and delivery stations.

More Distribution Centers

One stage of this process has already been completed: in February, Amazon inaugurated, in Cajamar, in the São Paulo Metropolitan Region, its largest distribution center in Latin America, GRU9. The space measures the equivalent of six municipal markets in São Paulo and houses both its own products and the program Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), where you owners of online stores leave their deliveries by the company.

Part of the expansion in the supply of products designed by Amazon must come from FBA itself. “This is a year of FBA. We are expanding to more states, more distribution centers like GRU9 will receive partner products,” says Sztrajtman. There are 100,000 stores in Amazon’s marketplace today, among owners who adhered to the logistics program or not.

Two more new distribution centers should be launched later this year, although the regions have not been disclosed. In total there are 12 spaces like this, 140 delivery stations – logistics centers dedicated to last mile operations.
