One day after the Congress overturned the decree that increased the Tax on Financial Operations (IOF), President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) appealed to social networks to defend his tax policy and reinforce the social justice discourse.
Lula has published a sequence of comics in which two characters discuss “Tititi” about tax increases. “The government wants those who have more pay more,” says one of them. The same character lists other petista management proposals, such as income tax exemption for those who earn up to $ 5,000, the creation of an ICMS cashback system and the end of tax exemptions that benefit the richest.
Amid tension with Congress, which overthrew the decree by large majority, the Plateau seeks to consolidate the narrative that the measures aim to correct historical distortions in the tax system, not simply raising the tax burden.

“A lot of people are talking about tax in Brazil in recent days. It is important to understand what is actually being proposed. The government wants to make tax changes fighting privileges and injustices,” Lula wrote in the caption of the publication.
The president concluded: “The logic is simple: those who have more proportionally pays more.”
