After being rescued and undergoing autopsy, body of Juliana Marins awaits repatriation

The body of publicist Juliana Marins was lifted on Wednesday morning, as Muhammad Syafi’i, head of Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Badas), confirmed. The carioca was found dead on Tuesday on Mount Rinjani, on the island of Lombok, after falling into a bluff and stuck about 600 meters from the trail. On the slope, considered difficult to reach, the young woman was almost four days without water, food or shelter. The expectation now is that, after the autopsy held at Bhayangkara Hospital, the body of the Brazilian is brought back to the country. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, through the Embassy in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, informs that it provides consular assistance to family members.

Itamaraty adds that, in case of death of a Brazilian citizen abroad, embassies and consulates can provide guidance to family members, support their contacts with the local government and take care of the issuance of the necessary documents for the transfer of the body to Brazil. Costs are often the responsibility of the family, as Brazilian law prohibits the transfer of remains of deceased Brazilians abroad to be funded with public resources.

See below the list of documents required for the transfer:

Original Death Certificate (Death Certificate); Body Transit Certificate (Transit Allow); Certificate of Certificate of package; Sanitary certificate of non-contagious disease (Non-Contagious Disease Certificate).

With all the documentation in hand, the Brazilian consulate may issue a transfer authorization, which should be presented on boarding and arrival to the country. It is noteworthy that, as body transport is usually done by air and as a special load, it is necessary to hire a local funeral home to take care of the shipping to the airport. On Brazilian soil, another funeral home may take over the procedures.

Upon arriving in Brazil, the body should be inspected by the airport health surveillance, which will also check the documents before the final release. The service provided by the Brazilian State occurs from the contact of the citizen interested in carrying out the transfer.

Understand how was the rescue

In an interview with the local press, Syafi’i said that initially the team expected to rescue with helicopter support, but bad weather in the region prevented the use of aircraft. Thus, local authorities decided to complete the ransom manually, with strings and lifting system.

A rescue team was mobilized for the action. Under intense fog, the group, connected by strings, came down with caution through the slope until it reached the point where the young woman was, about 600 meters below the trail. The images of the action circulate through social networks, and although it seems an official operation, most of those present acted voluntarily. Agam Rinjani was one of the most prominent anonymous faces in the rescue.

In an interview with Globo, Agam stated that he and other volunteers spent the night with Juliana on the edge of a cliff, using anchors to prevent her from descending further by the slope. During the rescue, the climber even hurt his leg and faced adverse conditions: In addition to the extreme cold, it rained strongly at the top of Mount Rinjani.

The region where Juliana was located is known as Camara Nunggal and is between 2,600 and 3,000 meters altitude. Experts claim that the terrain is made up of unstable layers of volcanic ash, coarse sand and rock fragments.

Syafi’i reported that a team of seven rescuers was mobilized: four went to the victim, about 600 meters deep from the cliff, and three others were at the point of support. The mission chief also revealed that Juliana’s body was taken to the post of Sembalun and then sent to Bhayangkara Hospital in Mata.

According to Lalu Moh. Faozal, regional secretary of Nusa Tenggara Barat, province where the city of Mata were located, Juliana’s body will be self -opposed in the coming hours at Bhayangkara Hospital.

“As soon as we are over, we can send it to Denpasar, in Bali, for repatriation to its country of origin, Brazil,” Faozal said in an interview with the local press.

The secretary also stated that Juliana’s family will be present at the autopsy. In addition, the provincial government covers all family needs while they are there, including ambulances and transportation.

Who was Juliana Marins?

Juliana was born in Niterói, in Rio de Janeiro, and acted as a publicist. Passionate about travel and outdoor sports, she had embarked on a backpack through the Southeast Asia since February this year. During the trip, he visited countries such as Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

On social networks, the publicist published recent photographs of the trip. “Making a long trip alone means that feeling will always be more intense and unpredictable than we are used to. And it’s okay. I never felt so alive,” he wrote in a May 29th publication.

After the accident, Juliana did not make direct contact with her family due to the lack of signal. The information arrived in Brazil through a group of tourists who also made the trail and managed to trigger people close to the victim through social networks, sending messages to several people after finding their profile.

Four days of intense searches

The fall of Juliana mobilized local authorities, volunteers, the team of Rinjani National Park, as well as friends and family in Brazil. The park has completely closed tourist access to the trails to concentrate rescue efforts. Helicopters were called, but found it difficult to land due to the dense fog and the limitations of airspace.

The family accompanied everything from Brazil and did daily updates on social networks, keeping alive the hope of rediscovering it alive. In the last 48 hours, a drill has been taken to the mountain as part of an alternative rescue strategy, and land teams managed to advance about 400 meters from the descent, estimating that Juliana was 650 meters below.

Juliana fell in the region of Camara Nunggal, an area of rocky and unstable slope on the trail that connects Sembalun Pelangan to the summit of Mount Rinjani. Considered one of the most dangerous points of the trail, the place combines sharp slopes, loose ground and absence of protections, which makes it vulnerable to accidents even with guides present.

The altitude of the point where it fell is between 2,600 and 3,000 meters, with strong climate change and fog. The cellular signal does not virtually do not exist in the region, and the body rescue was only possible by descent with strings and climbing equipment, making it difficult to respond in the early hours after the accident.

The guide’s report: “I did not abandon Juliana”

The guide accompanying Juliana Marins on the trail denied leaving the publicist before the accident. In an interview with Globo, Ali Musthofa confirmed that he advised Juliana to rest while walking, but said the agreed was that he would wait for her a little further.

Musthofa said he gave testimony to the police on Sunday when he got out of the mountain. According to him, who has been running as a guide in the region since November 2023 and usually climbing Rinjani twice a week, was only “three minutes” ahead of Juliana and returned to see her when she was surprised by the Brazilian to reach the combined point.

“Actually, I didn’t leave her, but I waited three minutes in front of her.” After about 15 or 30 minutes, Juliana didn’t show up. I searched for her in the last resting location, but I didn’t find her. I said I would wait for you ahead. I told her to rest. I realized that she had fallen when I saw the light of a flashlight in a ravine about 150 meters deep and heard her voice asking for help. I said I would help her, ”said Musthofa.

The guide said he called the company where he works to warn about the accident and ask them to call the ransom.

– I called the organization where I work, because it was not possible to help to a depth of about 150 meters without safety equipment. They gave the information to the rescue team, which ran to help and prepare the necessary equipment – highlighted Musthofa, according to whom Juliana paid 2,500,000 Indonesian rules for the package (equivalent to about $ 830 at the current price).
