A tour in search of adventure in Southeast Asia ended with an urgent request for help. Brazilian publicist Juliana Marins, 26, from Niterói, in Rio de Janeiro, fell during a guided trail on Mount Rinjani, on the island of Lombok, Indonesia. The case rekindles the warning of the dangers hidden on the beautiful trails of Mount Rinjani, one of Indonesia’s most sought after destinations by tourists and mountaineers, but also one of the most challenging.
In recent years, Monte Rinjani has been the scene of a series of serious accidents, involving both foreign tourists and local climbers. The treacherous trails and the rugged terrain have already caused fatal falls and dramatic rescues.
Among the most recent cases are the death of a Malay Mountainist in May 2025; the fall of an Indonesian teenager in 2024; the accident with an Irish tourist who miraculously survived a drop of more than 200 meters; and the death of a young Israeli in 2022.

Despite the efforts of search and rescue teams, he was found already lifeless.
According to the authority of the Rinjani National Park, the group had stopped to rest when Rennie decided to move alone, disregarding the security protocol.
The evacuation operation lasted more than three hours due to the complexity of the terrain. According to witnesses, Rennie dismissed the use of safety ropes, which may have contributed to the tragedy.

What is Mount Rinjani?
At 3,726 meters, Mount Rinjani is the second highest peak in Indonesia and one of the country’s active volcanoes. Located on Lombok Island, Mount is part of Guunung Rinjani National Park, a protected and revered area for both its geological and its spiritual value to the places.
The trail to the summit can last from two to four days, depending on the route, and crosses dense forests, steep paradors and altitude areas with temperatures that can plummet at night. The national park receives between 40 thousand and 50 thousand visitors per year – most attracted by lush landscapes, the Lake of Segara Anak Crater and the possibility of camping in the midst of volcanic edge.
Even with the presence of accredited guides and the control of access to the park, Rinjani remains a physical and psychological challenge. According to the head of the Rinjani Conservation Center, Yemen, the accidents are recurring mainly among tourists who do not know the conditions of the land well. “It is essential to be physically and mentally prepared and never underestimate the challenge that Rinjani represents,” he said in an interview with Antara.
