Fordow plant is the target of a new attack in Iran, says agency; Israel would be responsible

The nuclear plant of Fordowone of the most protected and strategic of the Iranian nuclear program, was the target of new attacks at dawn on Monday (23), according to reports from the Iranian state press. The installation is located in the province of Qom, in the center of Iran, and had already been bombarded by the United States last Saturday (21).

According to the Semioficial News Agency Tasnimthe authorship of the new attack would be Israel, a country that also carried out air operations against Iranian nuclear infrastructure over the past week.

The Isna agency quoted the spokesman for the province’s Crisis Management Center, which minimized the risks to the local population: “There will be no danger or threat to citizens,” the regional authority said.

Climbing in the nuclear program

The Fordow complex was built on a mountain, with high protection against air attacks, and houses advanced centrifuges for uranium enrichment. Installation is considered one of the most sensitive pillars of Iran’s atomic program. Its underground structure is constantly monitored by western powers due to the potential for production of nuclear weapons material.

On Saturday, the US simultaneously attacked three Iranian nuclear facilities: Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, in response to the escalation of the conflict between Iran and Israel. Washington stated that the bases were severely damaged using anti-Bunker bombs, released by B-2 bombers.

With the new offensive attributed to Israel, the Middle East crisis deepens. Tehran confirmed that part of the equipment had been removed from Fordow before the US initial attack, but there is no confirmation on the impacts of Monday’s second bombing.

Military climbing occurs at a time when the Iranian Parliament approved the proposal to close the Ormuz Strait, which can compromise up to 20% of global oil trade. The final decision on the blockade is up to the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Israel has not yet commented on the new attack. The Iranian government, in turn, stressed that its nuclear program will not be interrupted despite the joint military offensive between US and Israel.
