The United Nations Security Council (UN) has urgently summoned an extraordinary meeting on Sunday afternoon (22) to discuss the results and possible “peace threats” in the Middle East following the US missile attack at Iran’s three nuclear facilities on Saturday night.
UN Secretary-General, Portuguese António Guterres, said he was alarmed with the US offensive and asked for a retreat in the military actions of both parties.
“The bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities for the US marks a dangerous turnaround in a region that cannot support another cycle of destruction. As I have just told the Security Council, we need to act immediately and decisively to interrupt the fighting and back to the nuclear program of Iran. To avoid a wave of retaliation, diplomacy must prevail. Protected. Safe maritime navigation should be guaranteed, ”said Guterres during the meeting.
UN International Atomic Energy Agency (AIE), Rafael Grossi, reiterated his concern about the escalation of violence in the region and asked for a diplomatic solution about the Iranian nuclear issue. “I have declared on numerous occasions that nuclear facilities should never be attacked,” he said.
UK permanent representative at the UN Security Council, Barbara Woodward, also asked for a solution without the involvement of weapons, but stressed that the country is against the development of the nuclear program of the Aiatola regime Ali Khamenei.
“Our main goal is the cooling of violence, but the United Kingdom has always made it clear that Iran should in no way have nuclear weapons, as it would be a major threat to international security,” Woodward said at UN headquarters in New York. “But military actions do not create durable solutions to the problem. We ask Iran moderation right now,” he concluded.

Hours after the attack, Iran’s Foreign Minister Araqchi said the United States “betrayed diplomacy” and “crossed all red lines” after attacks on Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan.
Araqchi said he will travel to Moscow in the coming days to seek a solution with Vladimir Putin, called by him “an old ally of Iran.” “Attacking a nuclear installation is an unforgivable violation of international law and must be convicted. My country has been beaten, and we must respond in our legitimate right to self -defense, and we will do it for the time it is necessary,” the minister said in an interview in Istanbul, where he participates in the 51st summit of the organization for Islamic cooperation.
