Rainfall in Rio Grande do Sul leave three dead and almost 8,000 homeless


The number of municipalities that registered some kind of occurrence in the context of heavy rains that hit Rio Grande do Sul rose to 121 this week. The bad weather has already triggered the displacement of almost 8,000 people, according to a balance released by the Rio Grande do Sul Civil Defense on Saturday morning (21).

Jaguari, in the southwest of the state, declared public calamity.

According to official data, there are currently 1,914 people in shelters and 6,058 in the house of relatives or friends. One person is missing, and continues in three the number of deaths caused by thunderstorms. There is still the record of an injured.

State security forces have rescued 731 people and 137 animals so far, the Civil Defense said. Among those rescued are employees of a municipal hospital in Paraíso do Sul, in the central region of the state, which were isolated after a bridge fall.

This weekend, the sky remains covered in part of the state, including in the capital, Porto Alegre, where there is a chance of isolated blows, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).

A cold front continues to advance southern Brazil through the ocean, causing strong gusts of winds that reach 70km/h, especially on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, according to Inmet. There are, however, weather alerts disclosed to the southern region at the moment.

At least eight state rivers are at a level above the flood quota, some with the level still in slow elevation, such as the Uruguay and Jacuí rivers.
