5 scientific innovations created in the Ruptura series Lumon building

Created by Dan Erickson, the series Rupturefrom the Apple TVhas been very successful among the public. However, what many do not know is that the main building of fictional lumon is a construction that already existed and was the place of great scientific innovations.

The building has already been used by the important telephone company AT&T, Bell Laboratories, known as Bell Labs. It was built in Holmdel, New Jersey, United States, in 1962.

On site, researchers carried out fundamental scientific innovations for the creation of computers, internet and cell phones. In this content, we listed 5 things that were made in the building.

5 real innovations that took place in the Lumon building, from the Ruptura series

In the rupture series, five employees of a company called Lumen accept to be participants in an experiment in which their personal and work memories are separated.

That way, when they are in the office, they have only professional -related memories. Already at home, do not remember the office. Something very different from what happened in the place in real life. See below!

1 – Creation of the first visible LED

At Bell Labs, scientist Nick Holonyak Jr was responsible for creating the first visible LED, widely used today on cell phone screens and TVs. The invention was made in 1962, when the American created a semiconductor laser diode capable of emitting visible light.

2 – Cosmic background radiation

In 1978, astronomer and physicist Arno Allan Penzias, along with physicist Robert Wilson, made the incredible discovery of the cosmic radiation of background microwaves through measurements and experiments conducted in the building.

Through this discovery, it was possible to prove the Big Bang theory in relation to the origin of the universe.

3 – Photovoltaic panels

This item deserves to be on this list because its creation is linked to Bell Labs, because it was in the company that the modern cells of solar panels made of silicon emerged.

The story is as follows: the first commercial solar panel was released in 1881 by Charles Fritts. Decades later, in 1939, Russell Ohl elaborated one of the most modern designs on the panel.

Using this design as a base, Bell Labs developed the first viable silicon cell on the planet on April 25, 1954.

4 – bit

Mathematician Claude Shannon, then Bell Labs, was practically responsible for creating the field of information theory, which resulted in the first computational storage unit, BIT (Binary digit), which represents the smallest information unit used in data storage and transmission.

Shannon wrote seminal articles, which became references in the field of communication and encryption. Among his productions include “a mathematical theory of cryptography” and “a mathematical theory of communication,” in which he established the foundations for the creation of the field of information theory and the emergence of the bit.

Bit creation was extremely important for the development of computer science and manufacturing equipment capable of working with digital information.

5 – Unix

The UNIX Operating System of AT&T was developed by Bell Labs. This invention, along with the C programming language – also created in the company building – launched the foundations for numerous modern operating systems.

Currently, for example, MacOS, Apple’s operating system, has Unix as one of its bases.
